If you want to do something about the huge problem of food waste, you may want to join CEC members who are volunteering with Peninsula Food Runners, a nonprofit that distributes close-to-expiration-date food from farmer’s markets, supermarkets, restaurants and other sources to soup kitchens and shelters that need it.

You will be amazed at the amount of premium food you’ll rescue that otherwise would wind up in the landfill. Find out how you can help at Peninsula Food Runners.

You can choose to be notified whenever a need pops up or when special big deliveries are needed (such as just before Thanksgiving and Christmas). Door-to-door runs usually are completed in about an hour. For example, under CEC Director Marc Yelnick’s leadership and organization, CEC members have picked up excess food from North Peninsula Trader Joe’s locations every Thanksgiving and Christmas for delivery to emergency shelters, soup kitchens, low-income housing, etc.

If you are interested in participating, you can learn more and sign up at Peninsula Food Runners.
