CEC presented $5,500 in scholarships to six graduating Burlingame High School (BHS) students on May 21.

A $3,000 scholarship was awarded to Emma Dugoni, who is completing her high school studies with the Middle College program at the College of San Mateo, where she was President of the Environmental Club. She is particularly interested in habitat restoration and stewardship of public lands and has earned California Youth Naturalist Certification while doing volunteer work with the Presidio Trust and National Park Service, Grassroots Ecology, San Bruno Mountain Watch and the Pacific Beach Coalition.

Faced with an exceptional applicant pool, CEC also honored BHS graduates Shai Ring, Kairah Maqsood, Alexandra Rivas Rosales, Aidyn Eglington and Rowan Kelly with scholarships of $500 each. Shai worked for four years with the Citizens Climate League Youth Leadership team and also interned in the City of Burlingame’s Sustainability Office. Kairah was Co-President of the BHS Environmental Club, helped run the CEC Student Film Fest and served on the San Mateo Union High School District Sustainability Committee.

Alexandra is completing the countywide Youth Climate Ambassadors program and helped lead the CEC Film Fest and Environmental Club with Kairah. Aidyn has a special interest in water resources. She has interned and assisted research with EKI Environment and Water and the Leadership Counsel for Justice and Accountability. Rowan interned with Peninsula Clean Energy and Burlingame’s Sustainability Office and worked with the California Youth Climate Policy and Safe Routes to School programs.

This is the 11th year that CEC has presented scholarships to BHS graduates to honor their past efforts and future promise to maintain a livable planet. “We have never before had so many applicants with such extensive volunteer and leadership experience, and this news release just skims the highlights of these students’ accomplishments,” said Acting Chair Mike McCord

The CEC scholarship program is supported by community donations and a grant from the Morris Smith Foundation, Sterling Franklin, Trustee.
