Wednesday, September 16 7 p.m. “Take the Guesswork Out of Recycling”
Puzzled about what goes in the green, black and blue bins and what really gets recycled? Two experts will explain proper sorting and answer all your questions at a free program on Wednesday, September 16, at the Burlingame Community Center at 850 Burlingame Ave. in Burlingame. You’ll also have a chance to participate in a recycling contest with prizes awarded to the top winners. There is no charge for admission, but pre-registration is required at https://tinyurl.com/RecyclingExperts.
Presented by the Citizens Environmental Council, “Better at the Bin: What Goes into your 3 Bins and Why Your Help Matters,” will feature two Recology authorities: Monica DeVincenzi, Community Outreach Manager, and Alex Rinear, Waste Zero Manager. They’ll explain what happens to materials after Recology services your carts, and will share the latest news in manufacturing, state legislation and extended producer responsibility. The presentation will include videos of recycling and composting facilities, contamination quizzes, a review of acceptable materials and everyday actions for a more sustainable lifestyle. There will be plenty of time for questions.
Sun. June 7, 11 a.m. to noon. “Family Fun on the Bay Trail.” Bring your kids on this family-friendly nature walk along San Francisco Bay, picking up trash (plogging) as we go. Please bring gloves and a bucket. We’ll provide complimentary trash grabbers and gloves for kids. Free. Pre-registration is requested at https://bit.ly/FamilyFunonBayTrail. Meet in the parking lot at 1350 Old Bayshore Hwy. in Burlingame across the street from the Hyatt Regency. Ample free parking provided.
Tues. May 5, 7 to 8:30 p.m. “Saving the Earth, One Garden at a Time.” Burlingame Community Center, 850 Burlingame Ave., Burlingame. Renowned horticulturalist Frank Niccoli will explain how to reverse the alarming decline of birds by choosing flowers and native plants that boost bird populations by attracting insects they feed on and trees that provide shelter and food. Tues. April 14, 6:30 to 8 p.m. 9th Annual CEC Film Fest. Burlingame High School Theater, 1 Mangini Way, Burlingame. Finalist films will be screened and winners will be revealed, with cash prizes awards. Entries at due March 22. Submissions to the Film Fest are free and open to all students in grades 4 to 12 who live or attend school in San Mateo County. Free.
